The Aran Cardigan was born in the mouth of the Galway Bay, Ireland - knit by the expert hands of Irish women by the sea.  Sought after by fishermen and farmers alike due to the knit wool’s utility & durability in the coastal weather, the Aran sweater has truly become synonymous with Ireland.

The famous knit patterns are the embedded wishes of the legendary knitters for the wearer.  For example, the Cable knit illustrates the ropes of Irish fisherman, promising good luck and safety at sea.  This cardigan includes the Tree of Life stitch which symbolizes family, the Trellis stitch that represents success, and the Irish Moss stitch, which symbolizes nature.

Made with beautiful, 100% Merino sheep’s wool, this Aran fishermen’s cardigan will keep you warm without overheating due to its breathable knit yarn - just like the fisherman of its homeland.

About the Wool & Sheep

Merino wool is imported from yarn suppliers who work with small, family sheep farmers. Every single animal is very important to the farmers’ livelihood, so the sheep are particularly well cared for.

Aran Woollen Mills uses about seven tonnes of wool a week. You can’t get soft merino in Ireland, they just don’t have those kinds of sheep. Their Merino comes from sheep in Spain.  They use worsted wool sent over to Bradford to be processed, and then they buy back some of that wool.
